9-Dingle to Galway
The drive from Dingle to Galway was the longest day of driving on the trip.
We began by visiting the Cliffs of Moher, one of the most visited spots in Ireland. While we enjoyed the visit, we probably would not consider it to be at the top of the places we saw on this trip.
Our next stop was the Caherconnell stone ring fort, one of several stone ring forts we saw. One interesting item was that some of the stone walls were made by stacking stones diagonally on top of each other, rather than vertically, something we saw nowhere else.
The entire region we were in is called the Burren, with particularly barren and rocky terrain. In 1651 a Cromwellian Army Officer remarked, "of this barony it is said that it is a country where there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury them," which is an apt description of what we saw.
For obvious reasons, we particularly enjoyed the Poulnabrone Portal Tomb site.
The combination of a long drive and several interesting stops led us to try to find a restaurant before arriving in Galway. We were fortunate to find the Pier Head, where we enjoyed an excellent meal and a great atmosphere.
